Is a valid Australia visa still valid in an expired passport?Updated 3 years ago

The Australian Government does not require a person holding a valid Australian visa to have a visa label stuck in their passport to travel to, enter or remain in Australia.

E-Visas or ETAs are electronic. There is no stamp or label attached to a passport. Airline check-in staff can electronically confirm if a passenger has authority to board a flight to Australia.

Your ETA is linked to your current passport. If your current passport expires or you get a new passport:

  • your ETA will become invalid
  • you must apply for a new ETA

If a new ETA is granted it will automatically cease any previous ETA Visa you held.

Please note that ETAs cannot be transferred to a new passport.
